Five More Make 45 Blocks on the Trail

Tweet Sanctuary is the name for this fun block at the Unger Place (10300 NW Gordon Road, Cornelius).  The site features cedar trees and lots of birds, so the red-winged blackbird feels at home here.  

AB Farms, home of Bill and Addy Hesse, 11920 SW River Road, Hillsboro, is the site of this stunning Lone Star Variation block.  They have a history with Texas and have family there, so a Lone Star seemed the perfect block for them.

Killin Wetlands is the site of this classic block, Doves in the Window.  Do you see the birds in the block?  Metro has refurbished this old dairy barn at 46280 NW Cedar Canyon Road, Banks. With work still to be done on the site, it will be a bird sanctuary and gathering place for people to observe and enjoy the wetland peat bog and birds.  Indeed, the day this was installed, we spotted an eagle high up in a tree!

Dave and Carole Rohrer see lots of geese in their area, so a choice of a "Chasing Geese" block seemed just the thing.  Dave also wanted to pay homage to the six Native American tribes who lived nearby.  This farm is located at 10229 SW Old Hwy 47, Gaston.  The barn, originally built in the 1930's, blew down and was rebuilt in 1976.  The farm grew nursery apples, hay, cattle and sheep.

The Davidson Farm, 16511 NW Davidson Road, is an example of a typical farm in the 1930's.  Strawberries were raised here then, and now it is a woodlot.  Allison Rogers, a graphic artist, designed this original block, Pileated Woodpeckers.  Look carefully and you'll see the woodpeckers within it.  The building across the street was refurbished by Scott Rogers; it is the old Banks Schoolhouse.  The property has been in Scott's family since the early 1900's when great-uncle Pete Davidson and brother Chet Davidson owned it, and moved the Banks Schoolhouse to the current site. 

Now There are Forty!

The Krause Farm, owned by Forest Hills Farms, LLC, is # 39 on the trail.  This block is called the Evergreen Block and represents the logging done in earlier days, with the purple and lavender bands representing the current vineyards there.  See this one at 34560 SW Johnson School Road, Cornelius, best viewed going west.

A variation on a Plaited Block, this Interlink Block spoke to John and Ginger McDonald as the name of their farm is Interlink Farms LLC.  Originally a dairy, the farm has been used for vegetable growing, but now is a thriving hazelnut orchard.  This one is #40, and is located at 30730 SW Simpson Road, Cornelius, just at the corner as you turn from Hwy 219. 

Sun Gold Farms is at 9500 NW Evers Road, Forest Grove.  This vibrant Sunflower block is on the east side of the barn, ready to welcome the sun each morning.  This one is #37.  Charlie and Vicki Hertel grow fresh market vegetables, fruits and nuts currently, although the farm was a dairy in the late 1800's and has been in the family since 1940. 

The Walta Farm, owned by Finegan Farms since 1993, grows sweet corn, green beans, wheat and clover in rotation. The block is the traditional Corn and Beans quilt block is #38.  See this one at 9500 SW Old Hwy 47, Gaston, but it can also be seen from Hwy 47 just north of Gaston.  The barn, while no longer used, is old and of a "drive through" style, so that a team of horses could enter one end and out the other.

The Haag Farm

This lovely red barn dates from 1904, and supports this Lily Wreath Block.  See it at 4825 NE Starr Blvd, Hillsboro.  This historic farm once produced lilies and is the site of the historic Haag-Shute farm house built in 1890. It is also the site of the old Methodist Meeting House and is #36 on the Quilt Barn Trail. 

July 3, and Two New Blocks Go Up!

The Demmin Farm, 33488 SW Tongue Lane is up and ready to view.  Navy Captain Lester Demmin was in command of a nuclear submarine during the Cold War; we're happy to present "Captain's Star" as Number 34 on the trail.  He came home to farm for a while after he retired.  The farm grows commercial blueberries and other crops.

Number 35 is this small but classic house block at the Taghon Century Farm, located at 1645 NW Cornelius-Shefflin Road, Cornelius.  The property includes several old buildings from the original farm as well as a Sears kit house, the reason for the house block selection. 

Jungle Flower is Up!

The Jungle Flower Block graces the Harding shed at 47301 SW Carpenter Creek Road, Forest Grove.  The Harding's love to travel to tropical sites and this block evokes memories of those trips for them.

Peach Tree Block

Grossen Peaches, LLC selected this vibrant Peach Tree Block for their peach orchard.  It is #32 on the trail and is located at 23678 NW Grossen Drive, Hillsboro.  It's visible from the parking lot at the Helvetia Tavern, but you can drive up to it.  During the peach season, come out and pick your own peaches and perhaps enjoy a picnic on the grass in the designated area.

Blooming Junction Nursery's Black-Eyed Susan Block

 

   Number 31 on the Trail is a Black-Eyed Susan block at the Blooming Junction Nursery, located at 35105 NW Zion Church Road, Cornelius.  Drive in for a closer look, and enjoy the espresso, fresh vegetables and many colorful plants for sale.
